Walking Day 10 - Guemes to Santander

Walking Day 10 - Guemes to Santander - 17k Walking 3k Ferry

We left the Albergue bidding farewell to Ernesto and staff at 0800.  What a wonderful refuge he and his friends have built out of his ancestral home.

Today was a short day so we elected to take the longer, relatively flat ocean cliff and beach route even though my shin splint and sinus cold are becoming bigger issues each day.  The day was overcast with enough rain to force us to don the ponchos.  We think they have reached there useful life as when we took them off there was as many rain droplets on the inside as the outside.

The cliff views were spectacular and soon we came to a large cove with surfers trying to catch some pretty small waves.
The farmland came to the cliffs edge with no fence line and room only for a foot path.  I found it odd to see corn planted so close to a salt atmosphere.

These cliffs soon gave way to descending rocks and finally beach.  There was a large boulder field that divided the beach that was a challenge to cross.

We walked a good 2k on relatively firm sand where we saw many young children participating in a surf school.
We then crossed over the strand into the town of Somo where a ferry took us across Bahia de Santander to Santander where we quickly found our Albergue by 1PM.  Unfortunately the Albergue did not open until 2:30,  so we were off the post office to send the grandkids postcards and to a bar for beer and tapas.

The Albergue is clean with large sleeping rooms and no blankets.  It will be a cold night.  We plan to were double clothing inside our sleeping sacks.
